Last Minute FBAR Filing Tips

Today is the deadline for disclosing foreign bank accounts on the Form TD F 90-221, or FBAR, form.  No extensions of the deadline are available or permitted.  The form is required to be received today at the IRS Service Center in Detroit.  It is not sufficient to mail the form today, for delivery sometime next week.  If you have not yet filed the FBAR form, you have two choices in order to ensure that the form is considered timely filed today.

1.  Electronic filing of the form is available through the BSA E-Filing System which can be reached here.  (See prior post here.)

2.  The FBAR form may be hand delivered to any local IRS office today for forwarding to the Detroit Service Center.  For taxpayers abroad, the form may be hand delivered to a U.S. embassy or consulate.  The FBAR instructions specifically provide as follows:

The FBAR may be hand delivered to any local office of the Internal Revenue Service for forwarding to the Department of the Treasury, Detroit, MI.  The FBAR may also be delivered to the Internal Revenue Service’s tax attaches located in United States embassies and consulates for forwarding to the Department of the Treasury, Detroit, MI.  The FBAR is not considered filed until it is received by the Department of the Treasury in Detroit, MI.

If you hand deliver the FBAR form to a local IRS office, or a U.S. embassy or consulate abroad, be sure to have the form hand-stamped and retain a copy for your records.
